Second honorary doctorate for Rita Marley @NanaRitaMarley

Dr. Rita Marley is now part of the alumni from the University of Fort Hare, South Africa, one of the premier tertiary institutes in Africa.

Fort Hare is also the alma mater of global giants Olivia Tambo, Govan Mbeki and Zimbabwean President(dictator) Robert Mugabe.

In 2015, the University of the West Indies (UWI) awarded her an honorary Doctor of Letters degree for notable works in preserving and advancing Jamaica's music and culture.

Voodoo Glow Skulls rocks on!

Veteran ska-punk band promises a great show at Garf's with new lead singer Efrem Schulz.

It has been a time of change for Californian ska-punk band Voodoo Glow Skulls.

Founded by the three Casillas brothers (Frank, Eddie and Jorge) in Riverside in 1988, lead singer Frank announced he was leaving the band in June after almost 30 years together.

Voodoo Glow Skulls is known as a hardworking, hard-touring band and with this news, the remaining five members have pulled together, replacing him with Efrem Schulz, lead singer of Death By Stereo and Manic Hispanic.

ONU: "Gobierno de Venezuela toma represalias contra activistas de DD.HH."

La Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) denunció este miércoles (2017-09-20) que un creciente número de defensores de las libertades fundamentales en el mundo sufren represalias de varios tipos y durezas por cooperar con el organismo multilateral en materia de derechos humanos.

El secretario general adjunto de la ONU para los Derechos Humanos, Andrew Gilmour, presentó este miércoles un nuevo informe ante el Consejo de Derechos Humanos (CDH) en el que da cuenta de represalias e intimidaciones contra activistas que van desde la prohibición de viajes a la congelación de activos, la detención o la tortura.

El documento menciona a 29 países donde se han documentado casos de represalias e intimidación, lo que supone un aumento en comparación con los 20 anteriormente reportados.

Among the events slated for the celebration are musical performances, the inaugural Peter Tosh Awards, and a celebratory gala.

"As we celebrate Peter's birthday once again, this time with the Peter Tosh Music Festival hosted by the Peter Tosh Museum, it's undoubtedly a good time to reflect on the wonderful gift that Peter's life, career and legacy has been to the world," said Kingsley Cooper, co-founder of the Peter Tosh Museum.

"His struggles for equal rights and justice, and the legalisation of marijuana, have had an impact around the globe. I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to play a role in spearheading these developments and I am humbled to be a part of it all," he continued.

Rootfire at the Park to Donate 100% of Ticket Proceeds to Hurricane Irma Relief

Sticking true to their commitment to community and goal of consistent giving, festival organizers Rootfire, Ineffable Live, and Deuterman Productions have announced that 100% of ticket proceeds from the upcoming Rootfire at the Park will be donated to Hurricane Irma relief efforts. Returning to Cocoa Beach for the second year, the weekend-long outdoor music and lifestyle festival is set to take place at the scenic Cocoa Riverfront Park, with top-tier headliners including Stephen Marley, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Shaggy, and Citizen Cope.

The Rootfire mission to positively contribute to their community is put into full practice with the recent donation announcement. With damage and displacement across the state, Rootfire hopes to ease relief efforts while providing upbeat music, an immersive active lifestyle experience. Speaking on the decision to give back to the community, Rootfire General Manager Reid Foster stated "Rootfire is about building communities and helping each other out. Hurricane Irma hit our community pretty hard, so it's a no-brainer that we pivot away from the for-profit model and put these proceeds back into relief efforts."

Bully (a Lee Hirsch's documentary)

Los protagonistas del documental "Bully" no tienen experiencia como actores, pero sí con lo que significa el verbo "to bully". Esa es la expresión en inglés para el acoso escolar, también conocido como "mobbing".

El multipremiado largometraje del cineasta Lee Hirsch se centra en las jóvenes víctimas de un brutal cerco por parte de sus compañeros, a veces con consecuencias mortales. Una dureza que no ha pasado desapercibida en la sociedad estadounidense.

"Me llaman 'Fishface' (cara de pez), pero me da igual", cuenta Alex, de 12 años, con la voz envalentonada. Sin embargo, las imágenes grabadas con cámara oculta en un autobús escolar en Iowa, en las que el niño de nariz achatada y boca prominente es torturado por sus compañeros, muestran una realidad bien distinta, dijo DPA.
